Olin B. Chamberlain Papers 1918-1941

The Olin B. Chamberlain Papers, 1918-1941, consists of drafts of Dr. Chamberlain's professional papers, arranged alphabetically by subject/title, reports, correspondence. The majority of Chamberlain's papers are manuscript copies, drafts, and off-prints of papers submitted for publication and presentation in various medical journals and conferences. Of particular note is a series of articles submitted to the journal Neurology, between 1927 and 1933. A broad range of topics are addressed in this series, including arthritis, cerebral vascular accidents, digitalis, family medicine, psychiatric treatments and hospital care, nursing, juvenile mental health, and more. Correspondence dates from 1925 to 1940 with gaps and references his service with the State Board of Public Welfare and the Mental Hygiene Clinic of Charleston. Of particular note within this file are reports, including one by Chamberlain analyzing psychiatric cases in Roper Hospital in 1921 and 1922, and four by Ellison Capers and Mrs. M.T. Coleman, on their visits and inspections on behalf of the State Board of Public Welfare of the Charleston County Jail, Charleston Almshouse (for whites), "Ashley River Asylum" (Almshouse for blacks), Charleston City Home, and the chain gang camp. Correspondence also documents publication of papers, appointment to the Convention for the revision of the Pharmacopeia of the United States, and more.

Olin Burnham Chamberlain was born in Charleston, South Carolina on June 25, 1892 to Norman A. and Julia Davis Chamberlain. He graduated from the Charleston High School in 1910 and from the College of Charleston in 1914.
